Robert H. Sperreng

Age: 89
Robert H. Sperreng, 89, died May 26 at the Lutheran Convalescence Home in Webster Groves.

Mr. Sperreng was a longtime member of the Lindbergh Board of Education and the school districtís middle school is named for him.

He served on the Lindbergh Board of Education from 1955 to 1970. The Robert Sperreng Middle School was dedicated in 1971.

Born in St. Louis, Mr. Sperreng graduated from Washington University, where he majored in electrical engineering.

He went to work for the Union Electric Co., now the Ameren Co., in 1936. He held a variety of positions during his 32 years there, starting in the motor transportation department and finishing as general manager of construction. During the Korean War, his service at UE was interrupted in 1952 when he served for six months in the Department of the Interior as a branch chief for the Defense Electric Power Administration.

In 1968, Mr. Sperreng joined the ITT Blackburn Co. where he rose to executive vice president and eventually became president of a related company, ITT Meyer Industries, in Red Wing, Minn.

In 1979, he returned to St. Louis and worked for 15 years as a consultant with AAIM Management Association. He also was a director of Mark Twain Bank.

Mr. Sperreng also was a founding board member of the South County YMCA and served on the Metropolitan YMCA board.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Joan and David Gildehaus and Lynn and Harry Dengler; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Sperreng was married for 60 years to June Koenig Sperreng, who died in 1998. He also was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Dengler.

Visitation was at Kutis Affton Chapel. A memorial service was conducted at St. Lucas United Church of Christ. Burial was private.
