Lindbergh girls' volleyball team opens '05 season with 14-1 winning streak

The Lindbergh High School girls' volleyball team is off to a blistering start this season after opening with a 14-game winning streak.
Head coach Johnna Wieter believes that the Flyers' success this season is due to the girls' ability to play together as a team.
"So far the girls are playing well together," Wieter told the Call. "We have players that are excited about the year."
The Flyers (14-1) competed in the Southeast Missouri State University tournament last weekend in Cape Girar-deau, where they reached the championship game before falling to Farmington 25-23, 25-16.
"We could not get a serve over the net," Wieter said. "Our serving errors is what kept us out of the game."
Despite the loss, Wieter believes that the tournament is a good team-building trip for the Flyers.
"The SEMO tournament is where we always seem to come together and really get to know each other," Wieter said.
The Flyers did have some bad news come out of the tournament as senior right side hitter Sarah Buchschacher broke her foot in three places during warm-ups last Friday.
The loss of Buchschacher was hard on the Flyers despite senior Anne Soete stepping in and performing solidly for Lindbergh.
"Anne really stepped in and did a wonderful job," Wieter said. "She tried to fill some pretty big shoes this weekend."
The Flyers are back in action today — Sept. 15 — when they travel to Webster Groves for a non-conference meeting with the Statesmen.
"I don't really know anything about them this year," Wieter said. "We just need to go in and try to play our game and not worry about what everybody else is doing."
Lindbergh's meeting with the Statesmen is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
