Oakville Legion JV coach pleased with season despite tournament loss

July 13, 2005 - After grabbing a fourth seed in the District 10 Tourn-ament, the Oakville American Legion junior varsity team reached the finals of the consolation bracket before being eliminated in a 9-4 loss to Manchester Saturday.

Oakville head coach Matt Boyer Jr. believes that despite going into districts on a strong note, his team ran out of gas against Manchester.

"Overall, things were going well right before districts," Boyer told the Call. "The tanks were running low and we just didn't have enough in the tank to beat them."

Starting pitcher Jake Frahm gave up six runs on five hits in five innings against Manchester, walking five and striking out three.

Boyer explained that despite having a good day on the mound, Frahm had problems with his fastball and getting behind in the count.

"He had a good day, but it wasn't his best game," he said. "He had trouble with his fastball and was working behind on a lot of batters. He couldn't throw his kind of pitches."

Mike Treiber came in for the sixth inning, giving up three runs on two hits and walking one batter.

"Mike's been pretty solid for us all year," Boyer said. "The balls that they hit that inning just happened to find holes."

Oakville center fielder Kevin Mahler had the strongest day at the plate with a 3-4 performances with one run batted in.

"Kevin's been solid for us all year," Boyer said. "He's a tough out that can hit the ball to all fields."

Boyer believes that despite being eliminated in the consolation semifinal of the District 10 Tournament, the 2005 season was a success for his team.

"I think the season went really well," Boyer said. "The kids worked hard all season and overall I was happy with how the season went."
