Couple ignite local passion for the Tango
June 08, 2005 - An Affton couple is igniting a local passion for the Tango and is giving residents an opportunity to experience the Tango at its finest.
Estella and Randy Ruzicka, who founded the Tango Society of St. Louis, studied Tango in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and have brought the ambience of Buenos Aires to St. Louis through social and educational events sponsored by the Tango Society of St. Louis.
The society, founded in June 2001, is a non-profit organization.
This weekend, the couple will present "The Gypsies' Tango," a dance theater premiere that they wrote, choreographed and directed.
The show will be a presentation of the Tango in its many forms and will feature The Tango Rosa Dance Co., special guest artists and original music composed by Mitsu Saito.
"The Gypsies' Tango" will run at 8 p.m. Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11, at Washington University's Edison Theatre, 6445 Forsyth Blvd.
Tickets may be purchased in advance for $25 at metrotix.com or at the door for $30.
The society also will sponsor the "Celebrities Tango Ball and Gala 2005" at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at the Sheldon Ballroom, 3548 Washington Blvd.
The night will include a candlelight dinner, floor show and ball. Guests may meet, dine and dance with the cast of "The Gypsies Tango."
The dress code is elegant with black tie optional. Tickets cost $45 per person and must be reserved in advance through Metrotix.
