Lindbergh swimming against current in effort to reach state championships
March 30, 2005 - Although they're off to a rough start to the 2005 season, the girls' swimming and diving team at Lindbergh High is focused on one thing — state.
The Flyers (1-3) have struggled in dual-meet competition this season, but Lindbergh head coach Tim Lombardo is focused on qualifying as many swimmers as possible for the state championships in May.
"Things are going OK right now," Lombardo told the Call. "It's been a tough start to the season, but we should have a few girls qualified for state."
The Flyers' three seniors — Anna Lam-mert in 500-yard freestyle, Michelle Mam-ley in the 100-yard backstroke and Jen Walden in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events — have emerged as the team's heart and soul, Lombardo said.
"They are a big part in the spirit of our team," he said. "They're very good teammates and that's very important to have."
Lombardo also expects big things from juniors Jessica Fabick and Bonnie Lenzen.
Fabick is a sprint specialist who primarily swims the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. While hitting the state qualifying mark in the 500-yard freestyle, Fabick will be a key performer in the relay events.
"She made the cut in the 500 freestyle, but we're refocusing her into a 50 and 100 freestyle swimmer," Lombardo said. "She's been on some relays and we're going to refocus her into that mode."
Lenzen, another sprinter, also should be a factor in the Flyers' relay plans this season.
"Bonnie's definitely one of those girls that will be on our relays," Lombardo said. "She's been a project the past couple of years and she's now developing into that sprinter mentality."
Two sophomores also could develop into key contributors for the Flyers. Sophomore Alex Critzas swims the 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyles along with the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley. Sophomore Casey Lovera swims the 100-yard breaststroke, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley.
"Alex is our most versatile swimmer and individually, she's our best bet to score at state," Lombardo said. "Casey's one of those kids that's not quite reached her potential yet. I think she's just beginning to realize what her potential is. "
The Flyers are on spring break this week but are back in action Tuesday, April 12, traveling to Lafayette for a conference battle with the Lancers.
"We'll lose a few here and there for spring break and it does make it tough for us," Lombardo said. "Right now we're just trying to keep as many in the water as we can."
