Pupil to compete for state geography crown
March 23, 2005 -
St. Francis of Assisi School eighth-grader Scott Hack of Oakville again is a semi-finalist in the Missouri Geographic Bee.
Scott will compete for the Missouri Bee title on Friday, April 1, at the Memorial Union on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The state winner and his or her teacher then will represent Missouri in the national finals May 24 and May 25 at the Na-tional Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The state winner will receive $100 plus the trip to Washington.
The national champion will win a $25,000 college scholarship.
Scott won the St. Francis of Assisi School Geography Bee for the second year in a row, earning him his second trip to the Missouri State Geographic Bee.
Fourth-grade through eighth-grade pupils throughout the state competed in geo-graphic bees at their schools for a chance to compete at the Mis-souri Geographic Bee.
Winners at each school then took a qualifying test, which was submitted to the National Geographic Society.
Scott was one of 100 pupils in Missouri invited to attend the state competition based upon his qualifying test score. Each state invited 100 participants.
He is the son of Jim and Melissa Thomas.
Scott will be a freshman at St. Louis Uni-versity High School in the fall.
