Pupils perform 'A Penny and the World's Fair'

Rogers Elementary will kick off its celebration of the 100th anniversary of the St. Louis World's Fair today — April 29 — with "World's Fair Day," according to a Mehlville School District news release.

Pupils will dress in 1904 attire and eat hot dogs and ice-cream cones, which were popularized at the St. Louis World's Fair, to celebrate "World's Fair Day."

The Rogers Drama Club also will celebrate with a performance of "A Penny and the World's Fair" at 7 p.m. Friday, April 30, at the school, 7700 Fine Road.

In this play, a 1904 penny and a library book spark the interest of a young boy to embark on a journey to the World's Fair.

The principal characters in the play are a boy, played by Kevin Foote; a librarian, played by Bailey Compton; Thomas Jeffer-son, played by Blake Schulte; Meriwether Lewis, played by Michael Cimo; William Clark, played by Ronnie Barge; Albert Mc-Carthy, played by Nathan Adamson; Octavia McCarthy, played by Maddie Mayer; Sam-uel McCarthy, played by Ronnie Barge; Val-eria McCarthy, played by Leslie DeGonia; Benjamin McCarthy, played by Mathew DuChesne; Emma McCarthy, played by Ka-tie Kelly; Betty McCarthy, played by Ellen Brinkman; and Walter, played by Nick Bievenue.

Tickets for Friday's production are available through Rogers Elementary School.
