St. Simon seventh-grader shines in spelling bee

Anthony Burton of Green Park, a seventh-grade pupil at St. Simon the Apostle School, recently took first place in St. Simon's annual spelling bee.

He went on to compete in the semifinals at the St. Louis Art Museum. He was one of about 70 pupils who had won at their respective schools and were picked to compete.

After four rounds of words, six pupils were left seated in the winners' section of the auditorium — the exact number needed to move on to the spelling bee finals from Division 8 schools.

At the finals of the St. Louis Area Spelling Bee on March 20, the number of spellers were reduced to just 35 from roughly 500 area schools. After seven rounds, Tony was eliminated, but still captured sixth place.
