Peace Lutheran offers 12th annual presentation of 'The Living Last Supper'

Jesus, portrayed by Bruce Goldsmith in 'The Living Last Supper,' pauses after announcing to the 12 Disciples, 'One of you will betray me.'
Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper'' is one of the most famous works by the Renaissance artist and inventor, and members of Peace Lutheran Church in Lemay will celebrate Maundy Thursday, April 8, with their 12th annual presentation of "The Living Last Supper.''

This chancel drama depicts the well-known 1495-1498 painting that shows Jesus partaking of the Passover meal with his 12 disciples just before his arrest and crucifixion.

During the meal Jesus told them, "One of you will betray me.'' The painting shows the startled expression of the disciples, as each wondered if Jesus meant him.

In this presentation of the "The Living Last Supper,'' actors from the church will recreate the poses of the disciples in da Vinci's masterpiece.

One by one each character in "The Living Last Supper'' will "come to life'' to share his thoughts and wonder, "Is it I that will betray my Lord?''

The church's Chancel Choir adds to the drama with various musical selections. The service culminates with the celebration of Holy Communion.

"The dramatization we produce attempts to be as solemn and devotional as possible,'' the Rev. Dennis Kastens, the church's pastor, stated in a news release about "The Living Last Supper.''

Services will be conducted at 6 and 8 p.m. on Maundy Thursday, April 8, at the church, 737 Barracksview Road, near Interstate 255 and Telegraph Road.

Tickets are necessary to guarantee seating in the Nave. To obtain free tickets on a first-come basis, call the church office at 892-5610.
