The St. Francis of Assisi Midget fifth-grade Closed Division girls' team recently won the Catholic Youth Council Archdiocesan City-County Championship with a 13-9 victory over Our Lady of Loretto at the championships sponsored by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in St. Charles.

The championship was the culmination of a great season for the team representing the South County District in the CYC championships.

The final game was attained after beating St. Joan of Arc of the South City district in the quarterfinals 10-4, and then beating St. Gerard Majella of the South Central district in the semifinals by a score of 16-6.

The road to the CYC finals started with a league championship by finishing 9-1 against teams in its closed league.

The league title earned the team a bye in the first round of the South County CYC playoffs.

St. Francis then defeated Queen of All Saints and St. Martin of Tours to win the South County Championship before moving on to the Archdiocesanwide championships.

Excellent pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting throughout the lineup were the keys to winning the city-county championship.

The team's overall record on the year was 14-1 against other CYC Closed Division teams.
