A pair of future teachers recently received a financial start toward their careers, thanks to the Mehlville Retired Educators.

At their annual end-of-school-year dinner, the Mehlville Retired Educators presented academic scholarships to Casey Hoffmann of Mehlville Senior High School and Laura Lautenschlager of Oakville Senior High School. Each student received $800 toward her college expenses.

Hoffmann plans to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia and major in elementary education. She hopes to return to Mehlville upon graduation and teach at Blades Elementary. She is the daughter of Bill and Rita Hoffmann.

Lautenschlager also plans on becoming an elementary teacher. She will attend Truman State University in the fall. After earning her master's degree, Lautenschlager would like to teach in the St. Louis metro area. She is the daughter of David Hoffmann and Pam Williams.

The Mehlville Retired Educators organization is comprised of retired employees of the Mehlville School District.

Besides presenting scholarships at their meeting, the group also elected a slate of officers for 2003-2004. Elected by unanimous approval were: John Scott, president; Judy Burnette, president elect; Sue Seim, vice president; Jean Radice, secretary; Jan Mueth, treasurer; Maurita Lutton, parliamentarian; Marge Lechner, community ser-vice; Laverne Buckner, membership; Roy Harrell, central office liaison; Jack Jordan, legislative liaison-certified; Barbara Seper, legislative liaison-classified; Audrey Spitznagel, newsletter editor; Marvin Todten-haupt, nomination chairman; and Beverly Zimmerman, historian.
