School district recognizes employees, community members at annual event

Three very special employees of the Mehlville School District recently were honored for being at the head of their respective classes.

Rose Mary Sturm, Diane Richter and Cheryl Tentschert were the big winners at the district's 23rd annual Recognition Night ceremony conducted last week at the Two Hearts Banquet Center. About 500 staff members, friends and family members attended the April 24 event.

Sturm, a secretary at the Early Childhood Center, was named the 2003 Classified Em-ployee of the Year.

She's been in her current position for 25 years. Sturm also is an active volunteer, both in the district and at South Telegraph Christian Church.

The 2003 Elementary Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Richter.

A fifth-grade teacher at Wohlwend Ele-mentary School, she's been with the district since 1998. Richter previously taught for Special School District, in the Fox and Affton school districts and at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic School.

Tentschert, seventh-grade social studies teacher at Margaret Buerkle Middle School, captured the 2003 Secondary Teacher of the Year Award.

She began her teaching career as a second-grade math tutor at Queen of All Saints School. Tentschert also gained experience in the Fox and Webster Groves school districts before accepting her current position at Margaret Buerkle in 1996.

She now will represent the Mehlville School District in the Missouri Teacher of the Year competition.

The Mehlville School District also presented Distinguished Service Awards to five community members and one couple. Shari Elford, Debbie Wood, Zane Yates, Carol Arriaga and Kim Foster joined Randy and Anita Parks in receiving a much-deserved round of applause when they were presented their awards.

Retiring Superintendent John Cary presented the first-ever Mehlville Award of Merit to six deserving recipients for their contributions to the Mehlville School District.

Four former state representatives — Joan Barry, Carl Hendrickson, Catherine Enz and Joe Treadway — were presented the Award of Merit along with former Board of Education member Alex Lantos and Call Newspapers Executive Editor Mike Anthony.
