Chairman of fire district board injured in hit-and-run accident

For the Call

Mehlville Fire Protection District Board of Directors Chairman Thomas O'Driscoll was listed in critical condition late Mon-day afternoon following a pair of operations that resulted from a hit-and-run accident he was involved in Sunday afternoon.

Spokesmen for the St. Louis City Police Department said O'Driscoll was driving a motorcycle through the intersection of Gravois Road and Duke Street about 1:30 p.m. when an unlicensed male driver in an automobile ran a stop sign and struck the left side of O'Driscoll's motorcycle.

The impact dislodged the automobile's license plate and led police to the suspect, whom they declined to identify until arresting officers file reports.

The suspect was charged with felonious leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license, police said.

O'Driscoll was taken to St. Louis Uni-versity Hospital where he was listed in critical condition Monday, according to hospital spokeswoman Susan Hakes.

The accident leaves the Mehlville Fire Protection District Board of Directors without two of three elected members and the board's April 28 meeting had to be canceled.

Former MFPD board member Larry Youngblood confirmed late Monday afternoon that O'Driscoll had asked him Sat-urday evening to fill the seat held by re-cently elected Joe Gaterman if Gaterman is too ill to perform his duties.

Gaterman, who took the oath of office April 19, has been too ill to attend meetings.

"I'll probably do it if I'm asked,'' Young-blood said.
