Mehlville soccer team off to a rough start

Mehlville soccer team off to a rough start

By STEPHEN GLOVER

For the Call

It's been a rough start for the Mehlville Senior High School girls' soccer team.

The Panthers entered the 2003 season with 11 of the team's 17 players being either sophomores or freshman and like many young teams, they're having to learn the hard way.

"It's a little tough to swallow," Head Coach Chris Werstein told the Call. "But deep down, I know that we're making progress."

The Panthers (0-5, 0-1 Suburban West) received a 5-0 thumping at the hands of Marquette last Thursday. The loss was quite different than Mehlville's 1-0 win over the Mustangs which helped them place third in the conference last season.

"We got our bells rang, plain and simple," Werstein said. "Of all the games that we've played this season, that one brought us back to reality. We realized that we're not as good as we thought we were, but then again, we're not as bad either."

Mehlville found itself down 1-0 at halftime, but a four-goal explosion in the second half of play by the Mustangs lead to the Panther's defeat.

"We did a few nice things in the first half and created a nice quality chance at scoring," Werstein said. "In the second half, they really came out and got after us."

On Tuesday, the Panthers will play host to Kirkwood in an important Suburban West match that could keep them out of the conference cellar. Last season, Mehl-ville tied the Pioneers on the road 1-1.

"Kirkwood's going to be a tough match because they had a young team last year," Werstein said. "Unfortunately, you can't go out and buy experience and you can't buy skill. We're going to have to take our lumps this season. But if we're making the commitment that I feel deep down in my heart that we are, eventually we're going to be winners."

The Kirkwood game is slated for a 7 p.m. start
