Culinary students earn certification for restaurant management

December 05, 2012 - More than two dozen Mehlville High School students have taken a major step towards a career in restaurant management, thanks to the district's new Culinary Arts program, according to a district news release.
To work as a restaurant manager, a person must pass the ServSafe food management safety test. Topics on the test include time and temperature control, preventing cross-contamination of food, cleaning and sanitizing, safe food preparation, receiving and storing food and methods of thawing, cooking, cooling and reheating food.
The ServSafe test recently was given and 27 Mehlville High School students received passing grades.
Culinary Arts instructor Shirley Rauh stated in the release, "Passing this certification test is a major accomplishment for these students. ServSafe is coordinated through the National Restaurant Association, so the certification is recognized by restaurants in all 50 states. And, the certification is good for five years, which gives our students a lot of flexibility when it comes to working in the food service industry."
The Mehlville School District's Culinary Arts program was created so students would be trained in all those areas and be able to work as restaurant managers.
